DURHAM CENTRE
A special Meeting of the North Eastern Centre was held At 2.30 pm on the 4th of October 1959 in the Rex Hotel, Whitley Bay, to examine a written proposal from members wishing to form a Northumberland Centre and if carried, to elect Officers and Committee. ;The Chairman was Dr. Boyd, newly appointed Vice Chairman of the Caravan Club, and formerly Chairman of the Scottish Division. The Meeting showed by a large majority that members were in favour of having an independent Centre for Northumberland. The reasons were all very friendly and under the Constitution were in order and quite correct.
At the A G M of the N. Eastern Centre on Sunday 18th October 1959, held in the News Theatre, Newcastle on Tyne, Dr. Boyd was once again present and took over the Chair during the electing of the new Durham Centre Officers. Those who wished to opt to Durham Centre were instructed to sign papers and were then given a ballot paper. The nominations for Officers and Committee were for Durham Centre:
Chairman:Mr. J. Widdas Vice Chairman: Mr. G. M. Mather
Hon. Secretary: Mr. W. Seed Hon. Treasurer:Mr. S. Larmont
No election was necessary and they were wished every success and a happy year. Mr. Widdas spoke to the Meeting.
" It gives me a great deal of pleasure to be able to stand before you as the First Chairman of the new Durham Centre. Some might not realise that the name of North Eastern is being dropped and now we have the Northumberland and Durham Centres. The policy as you know is for the larger Centres to split up and the unit that the Executive in London decided should be the basis of a Centre is the County. As that is the case the two Centres are now Northumberland and Durham. We will of course have new pennants. At the moment both Centres are keeping their designs a secret."
The pennant we have today, was in actual fact designed by Mr Widdas and executed on
the sewing machine by one Mrs Dossiter, the motifs being applied. This method was used
for both the Flag and pennants.
